“Lợn cắp nách” – Pig being carried under the arms

“Lợn cắp nách” – Pig being carried under the arms

Lao Cai mountainous area is known for many specialties like Tam Hoa apricot, Seng Cu rice, Bac Ha wine, etc, and that could be popular to mention “carrying under the arms” pig (Lợn Cắp Nách).

In the markets of Lao Cai, we could easily see the feature of local people carrying the small pigs (not more than 20kg) in the papoose and even put under their arms, so the name “cắp nách” (Carrying under the arms) appears. “Cắp nách” pig is the unique type of the mountainous area with the simple way of raise. The pig after born is let through in the weather and there are no cages or breeding facilities. The pigs have to find food from the bulb in the garden and are seldomly feed with corn or cassava. Because they have to adapt early to their living environment so they have strong resistance like the wild animals. Each of the “Cắp nách” pig is raised in about one year, but their weight is just about 20kg and normally 10kg. The mountainous markets like Muong Hum, Sin Cheng, Bac Ha have many “Cắp nách” pig sold. The restaurants and people in Lao Cai city and nearby provinces often buy this type of pig.

The pig which is raised in the cage is often avoided recently, so this “Cắp nách” pig is very high demanded. The price is often between 100-120,000 dong per kg. For the fair price and wonderful quality, many people come to the mountainous market to buy even the tourists.
