Sapa Travel Guide by Traintosapa
Setting blissfully at the elevation of 1,650 meters on the Hoang Lien Son
mountain range, Sapa is the hill station built in 1922 and a fine resort town in
the northwest of Vietnam. Besides the fertile terraced paddy fields and primal
hill tribal villages, it is home to the fog-swirled Fansipan peak, the highest
in the country. It offers a peaceful place that is naive of tourism
modification.
The town has the temperate climate zone with the coldest months from January to
February; the excellent summer weather from March to May; the rains from June to
August. The town has the most pleasant temperature from September to
mid-December.
One of the most interesting spots is downtown Sapa. It is the place where you
will see ethnic people adorn in colorful hill tribe costumes walking the
streets. The H'Mong and the Dzao are the largest ethnic groups of this region.
Sapa's central market is a main gathering place for hill tribes from the
surrounding villages. They congregate there not only to sell handicrafts,
jewelry, orchids, mushrooms, and honey, but to also cultivate relations with
other groups, play games, and perhaps find a sweetheart. On some weekend
evenings, singing courtships and marriages take place.
Most of the attractions outside the city relate to nature such as trekking and
making an excursion. Every trekkers destination seems to be the 3,143-meter
Fansipan peak that is only 9 km from Sapa but can only be accessible by foot.
This remote trek provides plenty to see and absorb, from the scattered rocks
inscribed with drawings and designs of unknown origin, to the French influenced
hill retreat town of Sapa with its minority groups, beautiful villas and cherry
forests. The best time to visit is from mid-October to mid-December and in
March.
Eight miles (13km) from Sapa is the Thac Bac (Silver Water Fall). You can get
here easily on a motorbike. It is really interesting for who likes adventure. It
is possible to climb to the top of the waterfalls. From there, there is an
excellent view of the waterfalls.
If you come here, follow the road and you will get to the Tram Ton (Heaven's
Gate) pass- highest mountain pass in Vietnam.
